TGIF my lovelies and thank God we've finally reached the end of such a long week! I've been struggling through an ongoing migraine and dealing with some crazy big life changes (Mr. Jackson, little bit and I are moving out of our first apartment next month!) and I can't wait for a little break. This weekend will be filled with late mornings, last minute moving preparations and copious amounts of caffeine to power through. May your weekend be less stressful than mine!

Some days are just destined for sweats (comfy days, sick days & extra cold days all come to mind) but that doesn't mean you have to be frumpy. If I see one more girl decked out in head to toe Victoria's Secret PINK items I might scream but the lovely ladies above really know how to style the gym chic trend. The key to remaining fashionable while simultaneously rocking sweatpants is to keep the look young with slim fitting pieces, edgy shoes (I love heels with sweatpants!) and a monochrome color palette. Who said couch potatoes can't be chic?

Blondes Have More Fun?

For me, the spring has always been the season for change and my favorite way to switch things up is by changing my hair. This spring is no different and after years of dark hair (I've been every shade of brown, red and black imaginable) I'm craving some blonde in my life! It's a huge gamble and I'm sure there will be some more thinking, some trying on of platinum wigs and the hunt for the perfect color yet to come. What do you think is my best option? A darker ombre a la Lauren Conrad, a more subtle blonde or all-the-way bombshell hair? Leave me a comment to help me make this big decision!

This bold trend has been circulating the runways and the fashion blogging community for a few seasons and Spring 2012 is no different. For me, keys to the perfect color-blocking moment are keeping pieces solid and making sure that colors are complimentary. My favorite combination? Pink, orange and turquoise! Don't forget to pile on the gold accessories and rock the look with confidence; it takes a lot of confidence to pull off so many colors at once.

This year's Grammys didn't disappoint when it came to fashion eye-candy; sequins, gold cuff detail and haute couture made this awards show my favorite of the season but there were definitely a couple of misses (I'm still not sure how I feel about Fergie's bright orange lace piece with visible granny panties or Nicki Minaj's Cardinal robe). I die for Taylor Swifts look and am so glad Kelly Osbourne is rocking the lavender hair!

I've never been much for manicures for several reasons; First, whenever I pick a fun color it never matches everything in my wardrobe. Second, long nails aren't very practical for a mommy or for someone who uses their laptop as frequently as I do and lastly, I can never justify spending so much on something that will inevitably chip or grow out. (Don't even get me started on my hatred for pedicures. I don't want a stranger touching my toes, eek!) However, I'm very excited to see creative, neutral at-home manis making their rounds on the web. I'm beyond inspired to recreate some of these looks on my own talons this season! Look out for a tutorial or two.

Although it's not technically Spring yet, with temperatures in the 70s here in Florida I'm definitely ready to trade in my scarf and gloves for crisp white pants and girly nudes. Nothing conveys the changing of seasons like bright white accents and a pair of trendy sunnies (over-sized frames are out in lieu of the cateye effect this season) and I can't wait to hit the thawed streets!

I've never heard of this particular designer, but Shakuhachi Winter 2012 is just about as close as you can get to Alexander Wang without having been designed by Wang himself, so it warrants some excitement in this household. I'm loving the neutrals, sheer, leather and varied hems/interesting cutouts!

It may be premature, but what colors do you suggest for Spring if you don't like neon brights?

This spring I'm a big fan of small doses of neon mixed with neutrals. A pop of color is all you need to keep a look fresh and springtime appropriate. Creams, white and camel are perfect neutrals for warmer weather as they're not heavy like wintertime blacks and browns. I'm also loving mixing pastel hues from head to toe. Easter-egg shades are making a chic comeback.

I'm looking for long midi skirts that are chic but not grandma.

I'm not the biggest fan of the midi as I think it's a cut that doesn't flatter the majority of women, but if you're gonna do it keep it edgy instead of dowdy with a graduated hem, sheer overlay and chic colors.

Must have shoes?

There are several pairs of shoes that every woman should have in her closet: (1 ) Nude peep-toe pumps are the ultimate leg lengtheners and go with everything, (2) black pumps are basic and sexy and can take you from the office to dinner and back again, (3) suede booties are best for fall and an go with either jeans or a cocktail dress to edge things out, (4) leather sandals are for those days that you just want to loose track of time and picnic in the grass, (5) ballet flats scream comfy goes to Paris, (6) casual boots are perfect for brunch and so versatile, (7) one word: easy, (8) black city boots are sexy, end of story.

I'm a man, and still wear white pants in the winter. Is this okay?

It's a well known 'fashion rule' that any white or light beige slacks should find themselves in the back of your closet between Labor Day and Memorial Day but I say rules are made to be broken. As long as your pairing your pants with winter-appropriate layers I'd say you're doing just fine. Fashion, first and foremost, should be about dressing in what you love.

Are multiple bracelets still 'in'?

Layered bracelets are something I've been seeing for a couple of seasons and they can be fabulous when done correctly! Remember to mix metals, styles, levels of chunkiness and add a menswear inspired watch to keep the look fresh and current.

I like to match my hair color to the seasons, should I go even further and match it to my clothes?

Changing your hair is a great way to switch up your style. Experiment with your hair as you see fit but never to match your outfit. It would be best to match your hair to how you're feeling!

What about animal print? Is it okay at the office?

If you're going to bring your spots to the office keep them subtle and classic. Your workplace is all about first impressions and while you want your first impression to be fierce, it shouldn't be ferocious! Animal print is a new neutral, as long as you keep your color palette muted and your pieces tailored.

Net-a-Porter... Animal Style

White or colored business shirts? Long-sleeve or short-sleeve, what's appropriate?

Women should stick with long-sleeved tailored business shirts but can afford to be flexible with color and pattern as long as the item is paired with a blazer or pencil skirt/slacks. However, in a business professional environment men can wear either short or long-sleeved business shirts but should stick to classic colors such as white, black and blue. Short-sleeved shirts should never be worn with a tie and are better suited for casual Friday or a more lenient (read: creative) workplace.

Thongs or boy shorts?

Underwear are definitely a personal decision. I say as long as you're not wearing something in which you can see panty lines, be comfy!

With tickets finally purchased our Christmas trip to Japan is back on! In anticipation of an eighteen hour flight, layovers and buses, trains and cars I decided to use this Fashion Friday for Live Lean to show you what I'll be wearing in the air and toting on the plane.

Dressing comfortably is definitely a must when you're traveling internationally but there's nothing worse than the pajama pants / Uggs combo that has become popular among jet setters. For a more put together look with some comfort try leather leggings, a comfy T-shirt and a cozy cardigan. Chic pull on boots with the slightest heel pull the look together but remain easy to remove at each security check point. Throw a scarf on for some texture and use it as a throw in transit.

My carry on bag is always the hardest thing for me to organize but an iPad, fashion magazines and some warm sleep socks make the trip luxurious instead of strenuous. Remember to hydrate on the plane with plenty of water and bon voyage!

Thanksgiving came and went in a frenzy of pumpkin and salted caramel cupcakes, pie in a jar and muted neutral toned decorations and I couldn't be more thankful for this wonderful world of blogging I've fallen into this year. I've definitely been loving leopard lately (as seen here) and am currently lusting after the perfect pair of pony hair leopard print loafers. I love the mixture of serious structure, a wild print and the pop of unexpectedness that they add to a neutral wardrobe without having to introduce uncharacteristic color.

This House of Harlow 1960 calf-hair and studded leather version is by far my favorite and lends an edge to it's wearer while the BP. 'Mansion' Flats are all of the style at a third of the price. Whichever pair you chose remember that although leopard loafers are a trendy piece their timeless construction and ageless print will make sure they remain en vogue.

Since we've been home for a few days and are finally getting back into the swing of things, this Fashion Friday for the girls at Live Lean focuses on my mission for the week: reorganizing my wardrobe/closet. Think about it: your closet is the place where all of your clothes live, it's the first impression you get of your clothes when you go to get dressed and ultimately, it sets the tone for how you feel about what you're going to wear. I can't tell you how many times I've walked into my closet (packed with clothes and nothing having its own place) and complained that I have absolutely nothing to wear (when I know it's totally not true)! The key to maximizing the pieces in your wardrobe is being able to see them and visualize how they will go together. Follow these steps to clean, reorganize and maximize your closet:

Paring down: Sift through every item in your closet and organize into four different piles (items you wear often, things you haven't worn in a while but still love, clothes to sell/donate and clothes to discard). Next, fold, hang and organize everything that will go in your new closet and cart off the rest.
Placing Items: Hang garments (arrange things in order based on color and function), arrange shoes (shoes should be seen, not stored in boxes, so that you can visualize a complete outfit before you chose) and display accessories (necklaces can be stored on hooks instead of in boxes, scarves hanged on tie hangers, etc).
Assess Your Wardrobe: Take into account all of the pieces that you have and note any missing essentials that you'll need. Keep a running list (in your closet or somewhere more convenient) for shopping when necessary.
Maintain: Take the extra time to put pieces back where they go and tidy your closet throughout the week so a big overhaul is only necessary once.

Live Organized

This week's Fashion Friday for Live Lean comes to you from sunny California. Preparing for a trip is always a nerve-wrecking task if you aren't organized. Follow these steps to maximize your time, suitcase space and sanity:

Gather your basics. Every woman's wardrobe is (or should be) made up of basic pieces that can easily be mixed and matched to make several different outfits. Jeans, cargo skinnies, leggings and shorts (I chose flashy sequined ones and a more casual pair of high-waisted vintage Levi's) make for great bottoms on which to build. T-shirts (these are Alexander Wang and 3.1 Pillip Lim) are perfect for every environment and can be toughened up with a biker jacket while a chunky knit is great for cozy travel. Throw in a great going-out dress and an easy maxi dress and you're set for every occasion.
Add accents. Grab a few accent pieces that can be used to style your basics. Be sure to stay within a cohesive color scheme or graphic element (spots, spots, spots)!
Personalize with accessories. Make sure your looks include the little pieces that make it "you". A fringed bathing suit, floppy hat, perfect Alexander Wang Rocco duffel and House of Harlow 1960 necklace are my go-tos for vacationing without taking a break from my personal style.
Rationalize your shoes. Shoes are the most difficult thing to pack (they're heavy, take up tons of valuable space and are easily damaged in transit) so they need to be edited down before every trip. Chose only pairs you can wear with multiple outfits (studded loafers, nude heels to elongate the leg and ankle booties) and remember to keep comfort in mind for long airplane rides (I opt for a pair of Toms).

How to Start A Blog

Today I was asked by an old acquaintance if I had any advice to give on creating a successful lifestyle blog. I'm a total amateur in the style blogesphere and my mommy blog hasn't been around much longer but what little wisdom I have collected, I'd love to share with anyone considering this fabulous venture:

Blog about what you know and what you love. It's easy to get caught up in the things that other bloggers are writing at the moment but you know most about the things that are personal to your life, and readers definitely pick up on it!
Have your own voice. Your spin on things is important to keep the tone of your blog genuine. If you stray too far from the way you speak, write and think everyday (trying too hard to be "quippy"/ sounding too much like a Wikipedia article) your readers will sense that you're not being true to yourself.
Keep the pictures coming and the posts short. I don't know about you but most often, when I'm doing blog reading of my own, I scroll through the pictures and only read text when I'm truly interested. Keep your readers riveted with tons of images!
Blog because you love it not for the recognition it gets you. I definitely don't garnish as many readers as some blogs out there (and I turn absolutely no profit, unlike a lot of blogs) but I do it because it provides an outlet for me to be creative.

In the end, blogging is about putting yourself out there and curating bits of things you love. The hardest part is starting, it's all downhill from there; good luck!

Five Things

I decided to take cues from some of my favorite bloggers (namely Emily at Cupcakes and Cashmere) and recap the little things that made me happy this week. It was a pretty uneventful and lowkey week that involved a change in the weather (Central Florida is now officially a part of Fall), a lot of online shopping and a very badly fractured left hand(!).

A trip to the drugstore for a new Fall hair color (Chocolate Cherry, which turned out to be much more chocolatey and a little less cherry-y) also brought three new nail shades for Autumn.

With a lot of new changes happening for both of my blogs I finally had a chance to write in my Missoni for Target notebook (the only thing I was able to pick up from the collection). I love that it's so chic and only a notebook.

On Friday Mr. Jackson skipped school and opted to stay in bed; little bit and I made him a surprise breakfast with this recipe. While they're cute, they are definitely not my favorite breakfast treat!

With the Mad Men craze (and subsequently The Playboy Club obsession and PanAm adoration) so came my lust for a bar cart. Mr. Jackson and I don't drink often so it's mainly for me too look at lovingly, but I am slowly starting my bar cart/tray collection.

And finally, it's October, which means I can officially begin decorating and counting down for Halloween!

On My Radar: Fall Nails

I very rarely paint my fingernails, but when I do I love to make a statement (mostly glittery statements). Where Spring and Summer are home to whites, corals, mints and lavenders I tend to love the vampy wines and perfectly neutral greiges (think a fabulous combination of grey and beige) that can only be done correctly in Fall. Ever the glitter girl I am opting for salmon and copper over my pink and silver glitter nail (always the ring finger!) this season. Deborah Lippmann does sparkle flawlessly but look for dupes at OPI for Sephora and check out Essie for less expensive creamy fall colors. On another note: wouldn't it be the funnest job to be the one to chose names for nail polish?

I tweeted sometime last week that I had a new major wardrobe goal: to only purchase good-quality, neutral colored basics and to weed the random color pieces from places like Forever 21 completely out. If I manage to accomplish this, I'll be left with a wardrobe of items that can be flawlessly mixed and matched with little effort. I have a bad habit of stumbling into cheaper retailers and stocking up on trendy pieces that look cute to me at the time but don't make sense in my personal aesthetic and I end up kicking myself later for not holding out for the more expensive classics. What helps keep me on a specific path while shopping? When shopping in actual stores I always load up my iTouch with photos that are inspiring me at the moment and periodically flip through them to keep me focused. When online shopping (I prefer to shop at home!) I always refer back to some inspiration pictures and muddle over my purchases for a few days before committing.

Seeing Spots

One of my 21 Before 21 resolutions was to incorporate some leopard into my wardrobe in a chic way (a la Cheetah is the New Black) and I've been on the hunt for high-quality pieces that mix well with a neutral palate. Leopard and cheetah prints can look garish if not done correctly but if styled right and made with good materials they can be the perfect accent piece while remaining neutral. My favorite way to have a leopard moment? A pop of leopard on a fabulous shoe!

This new momma definitely provided a ton of pregnancy looks for me to drool over and shamelessly copy and she's even chicer in all of her post-pregnancy glory!
